Why Should I Choose A Dentist For Botox?

Dentists are already highly experienced and trained in facial anatomy, the administration of injections, and the location of specific nerves and muscles around the mouth and within the face. This is why it is not a large leap for dentists to become involved in administering Botox injections.

A dentist has the skill and expertise to carefully administer this injectable safely and strategically. Dentists treat oral health problems, but they also perform cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance of the smile.

In the context of dentistry, Botox can be used both as a medical procedure and a cosmetic one. Botox’s cosmetic benefits are well-established, as it is most commonly used to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.

However, it can also be used to treat certain conditions like teeth grinding, bruxism, facial pain, and headaches which are reducing a patient’s quality of life. Contact us at Bright Dentistry today to schedule a consultation.

Consultation

Dr. Aminlari will review your medical history and perform an oral and facial exam to discuss the specific cosmetic or medical goals that you want to achieve by getting Botox. This will help us develop a treatment plan that carefully targets the areas that you want to improve either with pain, jaw clenching, or cosmetic appearance. Dr. Aminlari will discuss with you how many units are appropriate to achieve these goals.

Preparation

The dentist will give you a list of things to avoid before your Botox appointment. You may need to avoid certain foods, supplements, medications, and alcohol. Consuming these things within a week of your appointment can negatively affect the outcome of your results.

Numbing

Once you arrive at the office for your appointment, we can offer you a topical numbing solution before injecting the various areas of the face to minimize the discomfort of the needle.

Injection

A microneedle will be administered to specific areas of the face and will inject a certain amount of Botox units to achieve certain objectives. Dr. Aminlari will administer Botox conservatively and you will have the opportunity to review your results and return for more if it is necessary.

Aftercare

After we have administered Botox, you will need to avoid certain things after your appointment such as laying down, exercising, touching your face, and applying certain topical products. This is to prevent bruising and swelling.

What Can Botox Treat?

Myofascial pain

Myofascial pain is a chronic disorder that causes severe pain in specific muscles. Preventing certain muscle contractions with Botox can be an effective treatment for the pain that occurs from this disorder.

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Botox offers many cosmetic benefits, including the reduction or prevention of fine lines and wrinkles around the face and mouth. Specific areas many patients want to target include frown lines, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, forehead lines, and between the eyebrows. Botox can also be used to reduce gummy smiles or upside-down smiles.

TMD

TMD is closely related to bruxism because many people who grind their teeth also have TMD. TMD is a dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint which is responsible for sliding motions and connects the jaw to the skull.

When this movement is compromised, it can cause a lack of jaw mobility, significant jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and clicking or popping sounds when opening the mouth. By injecting Botox into the jaw muscles, we can eliminate jaw pain and the associated symptoms of TMD, including headaches and radiating pain throughout the face, ears, neck, and shoulders.

Bruxism

When Botox is administered to the temples, forehead, and masseters, it can prevent the muscles in your jaw from contracting, which reduces teeth grinding. This is an alternative way to treat teeth grinding that doesn’t require you to wear a mouthguard to sleep every night. This will prevent damage to your teeth as well as pain from wearing down your teeth and straining your jaw.

What Are The Benefits of Botox?

Even though Botox is famous for its cosmetic benefits, it was first put on the market for its medical benefits in treating eye muscle disorders. Botox works by preventing muscle contractions. This mechanism can prevent you from making certain facial expressions that contribute to wrinkles. This can help you look more youthful. However, it’s also very effective medically in its prevention of pain and treatment of certain disorders like TMD and bruxism.
